1.  I am confused.  One day I read an article or book that a particular ingredient should never be used and then I read one that says it is O.K.

Opinions are often not founded on sound scientific research.  Much of the information is the honest opinion of the author but does not mean that someone else would strongly disagree.  Here is how we approach the choice of the ingredients we use:

  • Only the highest grade should be used

  • If possible, it should be organic.  Sometimes that is not possible or reasonable for price issues, but our preference is organic.

  • If possible, it must be vegetarian.  If that is not possible, then it is noted in the ingredient list.

  • All ingredients must be listed on the label.  As a manufacturer of cleaning products in Canada, you do not have to tell anyone what is in the recipe.  We believe that you have a right to know the ingredients in everything you use. This gives you the ability to make on intelligent choice whether for allergies or ethical reasons.  Even within our own line, you have choices.  For example, the ingredients in our shampoos vary greatly.

  • All our cleaning products are rated as Kosher 8.

  • We ask the question, would we use it on our children?  After all, CAERAN originated because the founder's, (Sharon De Cloet) son was allergic to laundry soap.  Our most important people to us are those we love.

  • All ingredients are studied for sound scientific literature.  We believe in living naturally but we also feel that you cannot ignore science.  There is a balance.

2.  I thought that by purchasing phosphate free detergent, I would be doing the environment a favor.

For years, we have known that dumping large amounts of phosphate in our waterways would lead to pollution and that is correct.  The problem lies in the information that you don’t have.  What ingredients are put in the place of phosphates?  In most cases it is nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA).  Both NTA and phosphates lead to eutrophication.  Simply put, algae just love these ingredients.  This leads to a huge overpopulation of this plant.  As they die, they use up all the oxygen in the water.  A body of water without oxygen can’t support life!  This is exactly what happened to Lake Erie, one of a group of 5 lakes that contains 30% of the earth’s fresh water!

Why is NTA worse than phosphates?  It does one more alarming thing.  It mobilizes heavy metals.  Sitting on the lakebeds of our waterways are metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium etc. and that is where we want them to stay.  In the presence of NTA, they are lifted and held in suspension.  The amoeba swims by and swallows the lead, then the fish eats the amoeba, and then a bird eats the plant etc and at the top of the food chain is us!  Every heavy metal ingested along the line stays in that animal and plant and we end up having it for dinner.

The ingredients in our cleaning products have no history of any use – linear alcohol ethoxylate – has been shown to biodegrade in 3 days!

3.  Why do you colour your products?  Isn’t less – more?

You are right, of course, except for two reasons.  We are creatures who like colour and it avoids mixing up products that look alike if it were not for the colour-coding.  We use FDC colouring only.  Choosing food grade colours ensures the highest level of safety.

4.  What if I don’t like something I purchase?

No problem!  We believe in what we make.  If for any reason you are not happy, we will refund your money 100%!

5.  Why can’t I get these products in stores?

You won’t see these products in stores for a couple of reasons.  We believe that education is an important part of the environmental choice movement, so our products are sold through knowledgeable CAERAN Consultants, who can provide not only product, but ingredient information and product suggestions. In a retail store, you are on your own to try to sift through the marketing hype and sea of 'green' claims. You may see CAERAN products in a few small independent stores. This is because we have made an individual agreement with this store and their markups are only minimal. Just like many other products sold today, CAERAN is a network of sales staff with an online store, which offers a 100% guarantee on all the products we sell.

6.  I have a lime and calcium buildup on my tub.  How can I remove it?

Up until now the only products that you could use for this problem were caustic and polluting.  But CAERAN has developed a new product that not only safely removes lime and calcium from tub and toilets to your class bake ware to your dishwasher.  It is biodegradable and safe enough to use with bare hands! 7.  Why are these products good for my septic system ?

If you wouldn’t drink it, don’t pour it down the drain!

There are approximately one million septic systems in Ontario, Canada alone. Septic systems are designed to treat household wastewater in areas not treated by sewage treatment plants.  During a normal year, the average person produces about 3.5 pounds of phosphorus and 9.9 pounds of nitrogen.  Theoretically, if the discharges from your home or cottage are non threatening to the environment (non-toxic) then this waste could be used as fertilizer.  In most homes, however, the chemicals we use render this waste as non-useful and potentially dangerous to our environment.

Septic systems that are not well maintained can result in public health and environmental hazards.  They are costly to repair and usually could have been prevented.

Chemicals disturb the delicate balance of microorganisms and bacteria that exist in your septic system.

8.  Why are these products good for me if I have allergies?

CAERAN uses only the purest form of the ingredients used in its products.  This along with the fact that we list all ingredients on each product helps you determine whether or not you can use the product based on any known allergies that you have.  We also take great care during the manufacturing of our products to ensure there is NO cross-contamination.  This means 2 things for you. Our personal care product line is manufactured in a different location from our cleaning products. As a result the ingredients cannot be cross contaminated.  Also, all tubs used to manufacture any product are thoroughly washed before a new batch is made.  All tubs are used to manufacture the same product and therefore there is no way that ingredients from laundry soap could get into a tub manufacturing stain remover and vice versa.  This means that you can be 100% assured that no trace ingredients can be found in the product you purchase. If it isn’t on the ingredient label, then it isn’t in the product. It’s as simple as that.

9.  I have heard a lot of controversy about sodium lauryl sulphate, and sodium laureth sulphate.  Could you please discuss this issue.

These ingredient are found in some of our shampoos as well as many other products on the market today including toothpaste, mouthwash and other body products.  It is the most common surfactant and sudsing agent used today.

With all products, there are always those who try to exploit their own views for their own gain.  We firmly believe that we can best help ourselves and our fellow humankind by giving you good and credible sources for your own research.  How about the American Cancer Society as a reference? If you really want to ask an expert, and aren’t afraid of the answer, do the following:

-      Search out the American Cancer Society on the internet at www.cancer.org

-      In the "search", type in Sodium Lauryl

-     You'll get several links which will help you understand these ingredients and the bad press they have

-     Read the “Debunking the Myth” article.  Read all of it, as it also discusses the misuse of the internet as a source of information.  The American Cancer Society is a fairly reliable source of information.

-    Here's a direct link which will be quicker, but the site offers a lot of other great information too. www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_2_1x_Debunking_the_Myth.asp

-          It is also interesting to read that the source of this misuse is e-mail chain letters.  Need you know more?

10.  What about propylene glycol and ethylene glycol?

This is just one more example of a consumer reading something they recognized (glycol) and then banding all glycols together.  Propylene glycol is the most common ingredient next to water in cosmetics.  It helps other ingredients permeate the skin.  If, for instance you have added vitamin E to a preparation, you want it to permeate the skin where it will do its job.

Glycols literally mean glycerine plus alcohol.  You may remember that glycerine attracts moisture to it and is therefore a wonderful moisturizing ingredient.  All glycols are not the same (just like DEA’s) but they all have this same humectant property.  Ethylene glycol is often confused with propylene glycol.  It does have the ability to absorb twice its weight in water.  It is used as a humectant (preserves moisture) but since it has such a very low freezing temperature, is also used in antifreeze.  It is toxic if swallowed but has not been shown to cause any adverse problems when on the skin.  Therefore, if you spill antifreeze on your hands, your body will not react adversely unless you put them in your mouth!  We do not use ethylene glycol in any of our products. We do use propylene glycol.

11.  Is Magnesium Aluminum Silicate Dangerous?  I’ve heard that magnesium can lead to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Firstly, the idea of aluminum causing Alzheimer’s Disease was born from the discovery that Alzheimer patient’s brains when autopsied showed a much higher presence of aluminum than those who did not have the disease.  The initial reaction was “ aluminum causes Alzheimer’s”.  Current medical knowledge does not bear this out. Aluminum is present in all our bodies.  Indeed, it is an essential mineral (in micro-doses) for health.  It is in our water and all of us have it in our bodies.  The difference is in what our bodies do with it.  With Alzheimer’s Disease, it is not excreted out and the surplus is stored in the brain.  Why does this happen?  Probably it is genetic just like some people are predisposed through genetics to some types of cancer.  With Alzheimer’s, there is s definite family link otherwise; we would have an epidemic in the general population.

Recent information on Alzheimer’s Disease shows that it is caused by a depletion in central nervous system reserves of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine not by a virus or aluminum. They are also deficient in the enzyme that catalyzes its production (choline acetyltransferase).

Back to the word aluminum.  If you have made your own pickling spice, the word alum would be familiar.  It is also an ingredient put in our water supplies to make it safe for drinking.  Alum is also known as potash alum, aluminum ammonium and potassium sulphate.  You will see this word coupled with thousands of others like, aluminum hydrate, aluminum acetate, aluminum chloride, aluminum lactate, etc. etc. etc.

Are they the same? No!  They are as different as if you were looking at oranges and apples.  They have some common parts but many more differences.

What about the ingredient CAERAN uses – Magnesium Aluminum Silicate?  This ingredient is found in a variety of items including table salt, vanilla powder and antacids.

Magnesium aluminum silicate (Veegum) is a hard, porous, granular mineral used in the making of antibiotics.  It is often used as an exipient when forming tablets.  It is in CAERAN's Avocado Face Cream.  We use it for its astringent properties since it leaves the skin feeling refreshed.

12.  How do septic systems work?

Unfortunately, this is not a pretty topic to discuss, but if you care about a healthy septic system and environment, then please read on.  For those of us that are on one of these systems, you cannot believe how much a healthy system can mean.

If you know about septic systems, then you know that the reason that they work is that micro-organisms present in our environment, “digest” the matter in the septic tanks.  As simple as that sounds, it is these natural little “critters” eating the stuff that we put down the tank and producing heat as a bi-product.  And what is it that we put down the tank?  Without being clinical, it should be stuff that we eat, drink, or put down our sink in the preparation of our meals.  Table scraps should go to the composter.

As all of these little critters eat the waste, a small amount of heat is produced, and their population grows.  If no other waste is introduced into the tank, then the population of these micro-organisms would grow until there was no more food to sustain them.  They would eventually die off and settle to the bottom as a thin layer of carbon and nitrogen based matter.  This is actually what a sludge pond is.  The result would be clean water that is suitable to be re-introduced into the environment.

Our problem is that we keep putting harmful chemicals such as phosphates, nitrates and enzymes into the mix from our toilets and sinks, which kill off these micro-organisms.  These chemicals eventually work their way directly into the environment, and cause great and long-term damage. CAERAN products do not contain these harmful ingredients and all of the ingredients bio-degrade to their base chemical compositions within three days.  The result is a clean effluent from the septic into the environment with no harmful chemicals being released.

13.  Why should cottagers use CAERAN products?

As well as the information about septic systems above, cottagers are also in close proximity to lakes, rivers and oceans.  This closeness means that potentially dangerous chemicals are so much closer (and faster) to introduction into the water.  We all need to be careful about all of the environment, but direct introduction into the water gives us no buffer, or chance to clean up a contamination, or problem.  We don’t want any problems anywhere, but there is no second chance with our waterways.  Remember, we use them for drinking, cleaning, watering of our farms, fishing, transportation, as well as their beauty.
